Eva Bubble Coasters

I’ve always liked the idea of mixing traditional with the unexpected. These coasters are not traditional by any stretch, but I love their use of high density foam rubber in bright colors to make boring items fun. Comes in a set of five, which seems just right! ($12). Be sure to check out their placemats too.

All I know is that I’m getting this.

I have a real thing for calendars, especially unusual calendars that I can use to frighten and mystify my office mates. This one ($30) is a classic. Originally designed in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli, this is both simple and bold. Every other month is black text on white, or white text on black.

I got an interesting card in the mail yesterday; a thick cardboard card with green stitching all the way though. Anyway, it seems to be Anthropologie’s way of telling me about their new collection called Stitch. It is still the same eclectic mix of frill and flowers we all love, but extra fun if you love embroidery and just a little more texture. Get an early preview here:

I know what you’re thinking… “whaaat?” Don’t despair. This is just lip balm and I’m just looking out for you. We all must have a little protection from the wind and cold this fall, and this will actually do the trick. It has a bit of a cult following and I’m sure you too will soon be a fan.

So maybe this lamp isn’t for everyone, but it really is unexpected to say the least. Designed by Kathleen Walsh, this porcelain lamp shines a soft light through the entire cast. Speaking of cast, what is cuter than a little chiuhaua in a vet collar?  From the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art ($148).

A4 Felt Shoulder Bag

I thought I was really onto something when I found this great felt bag at Vincon in Barcelona. Made from a simple, thick and sturdy charcoal gray felt, the A4 tag attached to the front represents the eurpoean version of letter size paper, sized to fit perfectly. Of course I use it for a lot more than paper ($25). You can get yours now at the MOMA store!

Bottle opener as art. With all of the boring bottle openers out there, who wouldn’t want a sleek little number like this one! Use the trunk to open bottles, and surprise…use the flipside for twist caps. Cuteness. ($9).

Prior to her most recent exhibit “End Times”, photographer Jill Greenberg put together this fascinating photo essay in 1994 called “Monkey Portraits”, which captures the amazingly humanistic features of our closest cousins. You cannot help but be absorbed by each unique moment captured in this quirky exhibition.

I must be the last person that has heard about these great candles. They’re so popular, and come in about every color you could want. I am always in the market for cool colors; I especially like this pretty gray version. The best part is, who wouldn’t love the sound of a crackling fire made possible with a natural organic wood wick. ($18-$23)
